A Digital Lifeline: How Comcast and Mary’s Place Are Empowering Families Through Technology

As a leader at Comcast, I’ve had the privilege of seeing firsthand how technology can be a powerful force for good — especially when it’s used to uplift and empower communities. One of the partnerships I’m most proud of is our ongoing collaboration with Mary’s Place, an organization doing incredible work to support families experiencing homelessness in our region.
When I visited Mary’s Place for the first time over a decade ago, I was struck by the energy and resilience of the families there. The shelters are always bustling — parents doing laundry, kids playing, guests meeting with housing specialists, and families navigating services in dozens of different languages. It’s a vibrant, hopeful place, but also one where the need for accessible, efficient support is constant.
That’s why we at Comcast were honored to help fund the installation of self-service digital kiosks at Mary’s Place emergency shelters and the Allen Family Center. These kiosks are more than just machines — they’re digital bridges. Designed with universal symbols and multiple language options, they help guests access vital services more easily, whether it’s scheduling an appointment, finding legal help, or signing up for a computer basics class.
Think of them as digital assistants that simplify the day-to-day—especially for families who are new to the area or facing language barriers. They’re helping guests feel more confident and in control during what is often a very uncertain time.
But the impact doesn’t stop there. These kiosks are also helping Mary’s Place staff work more efficiently by providing real-time data on service usage. That means better scheduling, less burnout, and more responsive care for families. At the Allen Family Center, they’re streamlining intake and giving families equitable access to essentials like showers, playgroups, and pantry items.
What excites me most is how these tools are helping bridge the digital divide. By introducing families to technology in a supportive environment, we’re helping them build digital literacy—skills that are essential in today’s job market and public services. It’s about more than convenience; it’s about empowerment.
At Comcast, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive. Supporting Mary’s Place is part of our broader commitment to digital equity and community impact. We’re proud to stand alongside them in their mission to ensure every family has a safe place to call home.
