ArtsFund Issues Grants to King, Pierce County Groups

This was a hard year for the economy, and a hard year for arts groups. Comcast was proud to continue to support ArtsFund (formerly known as the Corporate Council for the Arts) for programs in both Pierce and King counties. You can learn more about the group at www.artsfund.org. What follows is their news release about this year’s grants.

ArtsFund Grants Come within Five Percent of Previous-Year Grants

The united arts organization ArtsFund announced today that it has made grants of $2,100,226* to 62 King and Pierce County nonprofit arts organizations for 2010. The grants are for operating support, the most difficult type of funds for any nonprofit to raise.

ArtsFund President and CEO Jim Tune said, “As we expected, fundraising remains difficult in this economic climate. Although we did not hit the mark we were hoping for, our grants were within five percent of last year’s level. Reaching that point is a tribute to the tremendous work of our board, Associates volunteer program and staff and the generosity of 300 businesses and 1,500 individual donors.”

In addition to direct business and individual contributions, ArtsFund grants come from contributions of employee giving programs, earnings on endowments and revenues from ArtsFund’s ownership of its four-story building in lower Queen Anne.

ArtsFund determines grant amounts through a rigorous process driven by a committee of 14 corporate grant makers and private philanthropists. The committee reviews extensive application materials and meets with the board and staff leadership of each group for an in-depth interview on management and artistic issues. The process is supported by a sophisticated, custom-designed software program provided by Dwaffler©.

Since its founding in 1969, ArtsFund has made grants totaling $60.8 million. It also advocates on important arts issues and helps build the capacity of the arts through such efforts as board training.
