Unfortunately, a fire in Graham early this morning, damaged Comcast’s fiber network and disrupted service for some of our customers in the area. Thankfully no one was hurt in the accident, and our technicians are onsite and working to repair the damage as quickly as possible. We anticipate service to be restored this afternoon and appreciate our customers’ patience as we work to get service back up.
The incident illustrates how fire accidents can impact Comcast’s fiber network. Our optical fiber cable is made of drawing glass (silica) slightly thicker than that of a human hair. Because of this, fiber cable melts when exposed to fire the way it was in this accident.
When this happens, our technicians move as soon as it is safe to repair the cable and restore service as quickly as possible.
