As one of more than 10,000 Veterans working at Comcast, I am proud of our company’s commitment to the military community, especially in November, a month dedicated to honoring Military Veterans and Military Families. Comcast’s goal is to empower our veteran employees through VetNet, a Veteran-focused Employee Resource Group that has over 5,500 members across the company. VetNet empowers our members by providing mentorship, peer-to-peer support and internal/external community service opportunities while we grow in our life and career at Comcast.

As a board member of VetNet, I recently had the opportunity to visit the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs, which partners with Comcast in the support of military Veterans and their families throughout our state. The department helps connect veterans and their family members to the benefits and services they earned through their military service.

Comcast and the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs share the values of leadership, service, teamwork, and ethics. We are honored to work together to support those who are serving or have served our nation and their families. This is why Comcast is pleased to profile a prominent local leader who is making a difference for military Veterans: Washington: State Department of Veterans Affairs Director Alfie Alvarado-Ramos.

Alfie was born in Puerto Rico and served 22 years on active duty retiring as the Command Sergeant Major of Madigan Army Medical Center and Troop Command, Joint Base Lewis McChord.  As Director, she is a member of Governor Jay Inslee’s Executive Cabinet and chairs the Washington State Military Transition Council.

In this capacity, her agency leads statewide efforts for the seamless transition of service members and their families to Washington State’s communities. She is a member of the Governor’s Results Washington Design Team which addresses the effective delivery of state services to Washingtonians.

Alfie is the recipient of the Army Legion of Merit Medal and the Military Order of Medical Merit. Alfie has also received numerous state and national awards that include the Governor’s Distinguished Management Leadership Award and the Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary’s Leadership Award.  Alfie is currently serving as the President of the National Association of State Directors of Veterans Affairs.
