We’re hoping this is a reward that gets some attention, because the reward is for a crime that deserves attention. We’re offering two years of free Xfinity Triple Play services if your information lands the crooks.
At about 3 a.m. today (on Thursday, April 24, 2014), someone cut and pulled down about 200 feet of fiber optic cable in Arlington. The result was that Xfinity services were disrupted in the Arlington and Marysville areas until late afternoon, affecting about 20,000 Comcast customers.
That’s no good. So Comcast is offering either two year’s free triple-play (Internet, phone, video) Xfinity service or, if you prefer, $5,000, for information leading to the arrest and charges filed for the person(s) responsible for this crime.
It appears someone somehow broke the line that was strung from a power pole, and then pulled it down until they reached the power poles on either side. They got away with about 200 feet of fiber optic line, perhaps thinking it would be valuable for scrap. In fact, it’s not, and someone who is untrained in handling fiber optic cable could suffer severe cuts if they handled the line incorrectly.
“This is an unusual reward, but this is an unusual crime. Not only did it disrupt service in Arlington and Marysville, but we can’t have thieves running around thinking anything hanging in the air is copper,” said Steve Kipp, vice president of external affairs for Comcast in Washington.
