Comcast Supports El Centro de la Raza Back to School Drive

August 26, 2019

Earlier this month, Comcast Washington supported El Centro de la Raza’s Back to School Drive at the Centilia Plaza.  El Centro de la Raza is an organization grounded in the local Latino community, with the mission to build unity across all racial and economic sectors. We’ve enjoyed partnering with them for a decade, and we are proud to support their efforts to build unity in our community through technology, digital inclusion and equity.

Comcasters from our Comcast Unidos Employee Resource Group came together to support the event and we were happy to hand out 75 backpacks filled with school supplies for local kids in the community. We also got a chance to talk about and spread the word on one of the services our company is most proud of – Comcast Internet Essentials.

This is our internet and technology program that gives access to broadband internet, reduced cost laptop computers and training opportunities to those that come from challenging economic situations and may need some assistance in getting connected.  On this day, in particular, we were especially excited to get kids the schools supplies they need and have the chance to help local families that may qualify for our program get more information on how to sign-up for our Internet Essentials program.

Now more than ever, the internet is so important to in the lives of children going to school. Whether it is accessing readings, assignments, research for a project or even connecting with teachers and classmates – the world of education is embracing a digital-first concept. And, we want to make sure that students of all ages and their families are able to embrace this changing landscape and connect to today’s digital world.  More often than not, it is those who are less fortunate who often are unable to get the technology resources they need today, and we are proud to be Washington state’s leading provider of low-cost and affordable Internet programs.

To date, our Internet Essential programming has connected more than 300,000 people in our community to the internet, many for the first time, and we will not rest until we connect hundreds of thousands more.

It is a tremendous honor to work for a company that supports digital inclusion programs for those who truly need it. We believe in the power of community centers like this one and Digital Engagement Initiatives like these because they put tools and resources in the hands of thousands of people, and enable families and individuals to reach new heights in their personal and professional lives. This is why organizations like El Centro de la Raza are so important, and why we as a company choose to work with them.

After equipping these local students with school supplies and sharing information about our low-cost internet program the fun did not stop there! Afterward, we were able to stick around and join the community at El Centro De La Raza for their August movie night, featuring Hotel Transylvania 3 – a fantastic film for the whole family.
